lipstick on a pig

In the South, they are familiar with the phrase "lipstick on a pig." As in, you can put some on one, but it's still a pig. Barack Obama of Illinois used the phrase during a campaign stop in Lebanon, Virginia.
"The other side, suddenly, they're saying 'we're for change too,' " Obama told the crowd. "You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap up an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink after eight years. We've had enough."

He said "lipstick" and he now says he did not mean he was not talking about Palin, and "old fish" and he isn't talking about McCain. I think he better get his act together! You don't attack or speak down to women!
This election was not really John McCains to win, it was Obamas to lose. If he loses this election it will not be on issues. He is going to lose because he, and so many Democrats say they want to help the poor and middle class but they talk down to the poor and middle class. Even if he did not call Palin a pig, it seems like he did. You can not win the vote of people in these important swing states by talking down to them. John McCain was wise to pick Palin. Obama was unwise not to pick Clinton. I have no crystal ball and allot can change in the next 50 days. But if Obama is losing this race, in my opinion its because of his in ability to connect with rural America and for his insult of Palin, and not choosing Hillary. If I was Hillary, I would not hurt my chances of winning in 2012 by speaking for him. I would take a trip to Africa to help the poor and let Obama sink or swim on his own! After all, she did try to tell the super delegates Obama could not win the rural votes...and she could!

Amy, could it be, that you are a bit prejudiced against Obama?
I think it is ok to decide for one side or another, but our expressions of opinion should still be fair, shouldn't they?

I read the same story in a german newspaper, but it sounded a bit different then your version.
I did a small research on google and found an english version on this homepage: http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/obama_did_not_call_sarah_palin.php

Let's have a look:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."

Does that really mean, he insulted Palin? Or did he describe the situation (the Republicans "stealing" his probably succesfull slogan) from his point of view?

IF the above counts as insult, than McCain did the same thing some time ago towards Hillary Clinton:

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health-care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the 1990s.
"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

So if Obama insulted women with this, he is in good company with McCain, who then did the same.
I actually think, they didn't insult anybody.

One more thing: I fear, you are right: the election will not be on issues. THAT is really said. Because if the Democrats stick to their plans and promises, a President Obama will be probably better for most of the people in the US. Especially for the middle class and poor people. Especially for the economy.

We had that already in the past. I guess, Al Gore would have been in many ways a better President than George W. Bush. America AND the world would look different today and might be a better place.

Peter, I don't know if Obama meant to insult Palin. He says he didn't. He is a smart guy. It's hard for me to believe he didn't mean it. Maybe people should not make a big deal about it. They all call each other names. The real problem is women are not going to like what they think he said!!! They will not easily love Obama now. They were not so sure of him, and now it just got harder! Real "normal" "common" people will not love him for talking down to Palin because Palin is one of them! If Obama wants to win, he can not shoot down. He has to insult McCain and stay away from Palin. He could never win insulting Palin.

Well...as I said, I just think, he didn't insult Palin. Actually I think, the only reason, this topic has come up, is because the spin-doctors of McCain/Palin have made it an issue and accused Obama of having insulted Palin.

In my opinion, the Republicans are twisting the truth. They create an image of Obama, that is in my opinion wrong or at least misleading.

Actually all these things shouldn't be an issue of the election at all. And it is really a pity, that a lot of voters seem to fall for such false images. Which is not only an american problem - we had the same thing in the last german election. Gerhard Schröder deceived a lot of voters.

I my opinion, the winner of the election should be the best politician. And not the best Salesperson. It seems, the Republican are better at selling.

I agree with you Peter. People should not get so caught up with these small matters. They do...and they will. Obama already had a problem with white women. Calling Sarah Palin a pig will only make it harder for him to win back their votes. I saw a video of him saying it. The crowd went wild because they at least thought he meant Palin. It shouldn't be such a big deal. I'm sure she has heard worse. He never had my vote. I was always for McCain. I'm voting pro life! Believe me, there are many women who will vote for Obama just because he is pro choice. I like McCain for other reasons too, but this is my most important reason. You should know that McCain is talking allot about forming a more unity style government. He will have both Democrats and Republicans in his administration. Obama would have only Democrats. I think you need both or you do not get anything done! Obama is not really for free trade, McCain is. I don’t think Europe really wants an American President that wants to renegotiate all the trade deals just to protect American jobs. He also wants to stop the extra spending in Washington. I know that Palin has a mixed record on pork spending, but McCain has a perfectly clean record. In 26 years he has never gotten extra “pork” spending for his state. He has been very involved in finance reform. America will never have a healthy economy by over taxing the people; they also need to control the wasteful spending. Like I said, Palins record is not perfect…Biden and Obama have taken billions of dollars. McCain has not taken any wasteful money! Until this campaign McCain was praised by the Democrats for working well with both parties. He really cares about the health of the country. You only hear he is just like Bush, but he really is not. Biden was a good friend of McCains, and Biden questioned if Obama was prepared to be the President. The only reason he changed his mind is politics!
America's economy is built on small business. High taxes kill small business. Poor and middle class suffer when there are no jobs through small business. Democrats want to tax, Conservative Republicans want lower taxes.

chicken coop idea

Why not start with an IBC and cut a hole for the door? You could build closed laying boxes into it, and something for the chickens to roost on. Put some straw or saw dust on the floor. You could add vents to the side for air. If it sat inside a chicken run that you can walk into, the chickens could be safe, dry and happy. I have an extra IBC. Maybe this could be my chicken house? I bet I could even plant the outside of it with mud and grass for extra insulation and good looks.

Taking at look at Hotels select

I have the chance to review Hotels select.   https://www.hotelsetc.com/ This is a really interesting travel club.   You pay a fee of about 200 dollars a year to use their very extensive site.   I got this membership free.   It has many deals of mostly hotels, but also rental cars, flights, restaurants and events around the world.   I have been spending days looking at what they offer.   So far what I’ve found is amazing deals on the places many people go.   For example, hotels in Orlando are 50% less than deals you find at booking.com.   Rental cars are often 25% cheaper than Rental cars.com.   And they have a search where you can book a condo for as little as 250 dollars a week just 1 mile from Disney world.   That is 7 nights for 250 dollars for up to 4 people.   The exact location on Airbnb cost 650 dollars a week. If you travel to places like San Diego, New York City and Las Vegas this site will save you a great deal of money.   If you rent cars you will also find it wo

Reading Kingdom

I am very happy to review the Reading Kingdom.   This is an online program that uses a variety of methods to teach reading.   I decided to share this product with my adopted granddaughter Ruth.   Reading kingdom uses a six skills integrative method Ruth only just began to use the program. She is only 3 years old and cannot use the program without help.   But her mom says that she can already recognize words like girl and kids when they are shown on the screen.   Sylvia wrote that she loves the repetition of the words in the program .   That Ruth is memorizing the words she sees.     She will be able to use it for an entire year.   But I expect her to become a very good reader.   And what a great gift to give to any child!   She will have a lifetime love for books.     Sylvia also works with teenage mothers in Uganda.   And many of these women have never attended school.   So she plans to use these ideas to help these young women learn to read. http://www.ReadingKingdom.com what
