Please Pray

I just got a phone call from Philips very stressed teacher saying it's just not going to work, and Philip can not stay in her class. This is basically the 2ND time he has failed the first grade. We have some medical appointments lined up for him. The trouble is where can we send him to school next year. He is very delayed, in language and reading. He is catching up in math. He acts up in class, lies, doesn't bring home homework, copies off other kids work, and is sinking very fast! I work with him every afternoon, but he has a serious memory problem. You teach him something, and it's forgotten a minute later. The special education options in Germany are really awful! We talk with his teacher tomorrow, but she says no way can he stay...so what now? I'm really sad! We really need Gods grace and wisdom.

Just a Suggestion.....Homeschool is good if you have the patience for it.
It takes a special person....Mommy's are special and great teachers.

Amy -- I am a daily reader of your blog. I also adopted a four-year-old from Jiangsu. We just got home 3 weeks ago. I also have two other adopted children -- boys age 7 and 2. My 7-year-old is also delayed in speech and language. He seems to have auditory processing issues and has learning and behavior problems in school. He did not know a single sight word at the end of his first semester of kindergarten. I found the book "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" by Siegfried Engelmann and I now swear by it. It involves carving out 20-30 minutes of quiet time with that child every day, but if you can do that you might give it a try. It is only $15 on Amazon (read the more than 350 reviews). My son was reading books by the end of his second semester of kindergarten and at the end of first grade was reading at the end of 2nd grade level. I was completely amazed at how well he responded to this program (as were his teachers). He still has learning issues and we are spending a lot of time on math this summer (ugh!). He has to have a full-time para who sits next to him in class (for behavior), but he can read! Now if I could just figure out what to do to help him in the other areas... Good luck!!

Amy -- I'm so glad to hear it. I hope this books works as well for Philip as it did for my Collin. It was truly the answer to our prayers.

Why not start with an IBC and cut a hole for the door? You could build closed laying boxes into it, and something for the chickens to roost on. Put some straw or saw dust on the floor. You could add vents to the side for air. If it sat inside a chicken run that you can walk into, the chickens could be safe, dry and happy. I have an extra IBC. Maybe this could be my chicken house? I bet I could even plant the outside of it with mud and grass for extra insulation and good looks.

The Opel Agilia

I think I don't want to spend the money for the VW New Beetle. It's a very cute and safe car, but cost about 17,000Euros new. I can find it for 13,000Euros (this is the most basic model) but that's more then I would want to spend. I don't really drive that much. I'm pretty cheep at heart. I need real value for my money. I keep thinking we really should take advantage of the money Germany is offering to trade old cars in for 2500Euros towards a new car. If I buy a car that's around 10,000 Euros, then the Government is actually going to pay 25% of the cost of that car. That's really a very good deal. Since I know I will need a new car in the near future, I feel I should get a new 10,000 Euro car. The Opel Agilia is around 9,900 Euros. It's got 5 doors, and room for 5.
